Was watching a jtv stream and my videocard error'd and comp blue screened. So I booted up safe mode updated drivers and now I can't boot into windows unless I delete the video card and restart. When it boots into windows and finds the new drivers and installs them I'm f'd again.

Right at this point I'm stumped on what to do to at least get it working til I can get a new video card. I guess...

Before you ask...yes I swapped my cards again...I think both are officially done.

I've had something similar happen before. Maybe my solution can help you.

Download the drivers directly from ATI or NVIDIA for your card. If it's an integrated card (such as on a laptop), you may have to get your drivers from your motherboard's manufacturer instead. Basically, what I assumed when this happened to me, is that Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, gave you a bad driver that's not actually compatible with your card. If you can simply avoid the one from Microsoft there's a chance that's all you need.

EDIT: If you have problems with the MS drivers auto-installing when you boot, you should be able to disable this before you do the "final reboot" thing and repeat the process. If not, you could try installing the mfg. drivers after installing the MS drivers, but before restarting.

the only card that I have actually working only works in 800x600

I believe when it tries to boot into windows its trying to restore my 1920x1080 and screws itself. I have no work around..

As a related since you tech people like this kind of crap...

does this CARD
work with my motherboard?

seems like a fairly good deal for $50...kinda sucks I'll be using the money for a new video card instead of StarCraft 2 though >_>;

Edit: I need a card ASAP...and Best Buy is probably my best option if I stop in during my lunch break tomorrow if you can drop me a link so I know what to look for if that one is bad >_>;

If you're looking for one that will play FFXIV, this one likely won't work for it. Even though the number is bigger than listed in the system reqs (and was released later than the one listed in the sys reqs), the one you linked to is part of one of their "budget" lines and is below the minimums for FF14. I'll look and see what kind of cheap cards I can find to recommend to you and post again.

Somehow, I posted a huge thread for you last night and it is missing. I think I hit preview and then forgot to actually post it after getting distracted. Rather than recreate it, I'll summarize for you (after finishing the post, this turned out to be a lie). Keep in mind that I'm only referencing ATI cards as I know nothing about Nvidia's (crappy) cards.

The only video cards that will work for your motherboard at 100% capacity AND play FF14 would be the 2900. These come in three varieties (GT, Pro, and XT) but they're all close to the same nowadays. Best Buy does not sell these cards.

Now, you can run a PCI-E 2.0 or 2.1 card in your motherboard just fine, but it will work at slightly less than optimal performance unless you get a new motherboard. The difference is likely not that noticeable, so here is the "rule" for buying a FF14 compatible ATI card:

In the Radeon HD Series, there is a 4-digit number for each card (eg. Radeon HD 5870). The ONLY number that matters if you are looking for one that will run FF14 is the SECOND DIGIT. To meet the minimum requirements, the second digit must be a 7 or higher. The higher, the better on the first digit, but the second digit minimum of 7+ is essential.

As an example, the 4350 wouldn't cut it because the second digit is below 7. Cards like the 4850 or 2900 will work because their second digits are 8 and 9, respectively.

Dude...newegg doesn't even sell 2900s

Suggesting that card doesn't accomplish anything.

I'm not even sure I wanna spend over $100 for the 4850.

Edit: in other news, got the previous working drivers and it blue screens trying to boot into windows...and while its technically an improvement over not even trying to boot into windows its still obviously not gonna work...
This safe mode crap gets on my nerves but at least I can post on the forum. >_>;

Ya, the 2900 would have to be acquired somehow other than my usual means as well since Newegg is the only place I shop any more.

That should do it. ;)

If you're into overclocking, I'd OC your video card's memory rather than the core on that particular card.

Lemme tell ya...I bought it on 3 conditions

first being the 4850 you so desperately have been cramming down my throat.
second $15 rebate offer...you can't pass that up
last it looks like it takes up 2 slots in the back, should let me pull both cards move a cover down and not have any gaps in the back of my machine for some of the larger bugs to get in and use it as a jungle gym.

Then I'll have to go update my opt-in stuff for WoW at minimum...hopefully the card is beefy enough to run that beta. >_>;

Haha, I wasn't trying to do this, it just happened to make a good example when I happened to use it >.> If I was going to recommend anything, it's the 5970, but it's a tad expensive :p

If anyone else is in the market for video cards, Newegg has some good deals on 5770s for their end of the month blowout this month, with prices starting at $140.

Well...I can only assume that I killed those previous cards.

slapped this baby in...adjusted some wires(power cable running to the card for its mega ass fan and pretty LED lighted logo that matches my fans was actually hitting the side fan)...booted up machine installed card/drivers (gotta get newest yet)

popped it up to 1920x1080...and am blown away.

Everything is so tiny. Mouse cursors. Text windows. The Taskbar.

I don't think those old cards....could actually run at the resolutions they were being run at. >_<

I'm really hoping that when I'm around 6-8 avatars now that it doesn't lag and at least some of the crazy particle effects in Fallout3 and Dragon Age will barely slow it down.

Actually I pretty sure it won't...cuz the old cards sucked so hardcore.

Two things:

1) Don't count on your FFXI fps to get any better no matter what you have in your computer.
2) What's your new FFXIV benchmark at?

Mine is kinda doing some crappy things now, so I think I'm gonna have to RMA it, which could take 4-8 weeks. Seriously considering getting a part-time job temporarily so I can buy a new one in case I don't get mine back before FF14 release on Sep. 22. I'd end up with two at some point which means I could crossfire them too, which would be awesome.
